Thursday, July 16, 9pm, Little Theatre THE WEDDING SONG (Le Chant des mariées) Director: Karin Albou, France, 2008, 84 min., French/Arabic/German with subtitles During World War ll, the Nazi occupation of Tunisia strains the friendship of Nour and Myriam, Muslim and Jewish respectively, and both preparing for marriage. Friends since childhood, the girls and their families have shared the same house in a modest neighborhood where Jews and Muslims live in harmony. Each one secretly desires the other girl's life, but both must deal with various and often similar forms of oppression. Ultimately life-affirming, The Wedding Song is powerfully directed by Karin Albou (La Petite Jerusalem, RJFF 2006), who sensitively portrays interfaith conflicts, the intimate rituals associated with Sephardic Jewish women, and the conquering power of female friendships.
