Saturday, July 18, 7pm, Dryden Theatre TWO LADIES (Dans la vie) Director: Phillippe Faucon, France, 2007, 73 min., French/Arabic with subtitles Friendship trumps religious fundamentalism when a Muslim mother and daughter start working for a wheel-chair-bound Jewish widow in this little gem of a movie by French director Philippe Faucon. In France, while the recent Israel-Lebanon war rages, S'lima, a young Arab Algerian nurse, cares for Esther, an elderly Jewish lady. An open and respectful friendship develops between Esther and S'lima's mother, who share Algerian roots. Featuring warm and engaging performances by a cast of non-professionals, Two Ladies presents a satisfying slice of contemporary French life, keen observations of cultural differences and the often-fraught bond between aging parents and their children. Warning: Nudity. Generously underwritten by The Rubens Family Foundation and the Westminster Barrington Foundation. Back to film festival schedule » |
