DEFIANCE
Director: Edward Zwick, US, 2008, 136 min., English
Tonight, we are pleased to bring to Rochester a special screening of Defiance, the epic true story of the Bielski brothers, one of the most famous Jewish partisan groups of WWII. In addition, it is with great excitement that we welcome members of the Bielski family, several former Rochesterians, who will share their thoughts on this extraordinary portrayal of their family.

The year is 1941 and the Jews of Eastern Europe are being massacred. Managing to escape certain death, three brothers take refuge in the dense woods they have known since childhood. There they begin their battle against the Nazis. Daniel Craig (Tuvia), Liev Schreiber (Zus) and Jamie Bell (Asael) star as the Bielski brothers who turn a primitive struggle to survive into something far more consequential, a way to avenge the deaths of their loved ones by saving thousands of others.

POST-FILM DISCUSSION WITH SPECIAL GUESTS:
Robert Bielsky and Ruth Bielski Ehrreich, son and daughter of Tuvia Bielski; Sharon Rennert, documentary filmmaker and granddaughter of Tuvia Bielski and Alisa Katz, Associate Producer of Defiance; Note: Sharon Rennert is currently at work on, "In Our Hands: A Personal Story of the Bielski Partisans" due out in 2010. Visit bielskidocumentary.com.

Film followed by Closing Night Party at George Eastman House.

Generously underwritten by Marcia and Gary Stern.
